Sandy,

I personally like Machen for self study. It's the main book I used to teach
myself accents, and learned them well enough to catch some mistakes in another
curriculum a professor is writing, that I toyed with for a bit :-0

The Thompson study is FANTASTIC and includes an answer key. Also buy the
other learn or review key, as it's VERY helpful to compare the answers for the
Greek composition exercises. I think all 3 you listed are the same key. I NEEDED
both keys for self study!

The Farrell guide is just paradigms and I've never used it :-0

You can get some more resources here, but they use the modern pronunciation
http://www.nbcbible.org/ I use the videos, flash cards and the study guide. I
prefer to use the Erasmian accent though. I like to consult the dictionary in
Strong's concordance sometimes. A couple of the dipthongs are different from
most of the typical audios, but I find it a VERY helpful resource for
pronunciation.

I recommend using "Hey Andrew Teach Me Some Greek" level 4 before starting
Machen. Use level 3 first if you want a slow start, but it's not necessary. I
especially like the introduction to accents in level 4. Level 4 covers almost
the exact topics that are in the first couple chapters of Machen.

I found that learning proper handwriting right away was helpful to my son and
I, in our further Greek studies and put more emphasis on it than I think most
people do. "Hey Andrew..." is good for that, or you can print out homemade
worksheets using any font you like. I would pencil in lines over the Greek font.

I like Crosby and Shaeffer, but there is no answer key. I also like White's
book which is free at Textkit, but again no answer key :-0 I have used these
two books when I found something to be not as clear as I'd like it to be in
Machen. White's book covers accenting 1st declension the best. Make sure you print
it by not allowing the pdf to fit it to the page, but to leave it at 100%

"Mastering New Testament Greek" by Ted Hildebrandt is software that is a nice
supplement to Machen and there are audio supplements to the software here,
that are good to use in the car.
http://faculty.gordon.edu/hu/bi/ted_hildebrandt/ I have found LOTS and LOTS of audio to be imperative to my learning accents.
This curriculum has a LOT of overlap with Machen.

I also like one other book, but don't have it handy right now. It's an
immersion book that I use as a reading book, not a textbook. The newest version is a
hardcover with a CD and uses accents. The older version didn't use accents,
was paperback and had a audio cassette. Does anyone know which book I mean?

Dr Tyler lrtyler at grandecom.net is making a set of audio of the NT that has
the best accent I've heard so far. You can hear portions here at
http://www.donpotter.net/greek.htm of Ephesians in the TR, but he uses the WH for the ones I
bought from him. You can print out the WH at the link above for the software
supplements.

Print out part 4 of Visual Greek http://www.visualgreek.com/ for help with
vocab when a word just will not stick. Also I STRONGLY recommend you use this
resource for learning the prepositions. STRONGLY, STRONGLY for the prepositions!
For the 3rd time, no matter what you think about the resource in GENERAL,
this is TOPS for the prepositions! :-)

I hope some of this helps. My son, almost 18 dropped his Greek studies, took
the GED and started junior college early last fall, but I think his Greek and
Latin studies were very good for him. Good luck!!

  Hello --

My high school son plans to study Greek for the next couple of years, and
his father (who had Greek several years ago in seminary and now wants a
refresher course) will work alongside him. They will use Dad's seminary textbook,
Machen's New Testament Greek for Beginners. They will need an answer key, and
would also like to use some supplemental materials.

Which of these workbooks/study guides would you recommend, and why?

  • Study Guide for J. Gresham Machen's New Testament Greek for Beginners -
Thompson - ISBN 0024206504
Does this include the answer key to Machen's NT Greek for Beginners? Does
it have additional exercises and answers?

• A Practical Workbook to J. Gresham Machen's New Testament Greek for
Beginners - Farrell - ISBN 159244301X

And which of these answer keys would you recommend? Are they just versions
of the same thing, but with different publication dates? (I did also notice
that one is hardcover while the others are paperback.)

• Learn or Review New Testament Greek: Vocabulary and Answers to the
Exercises in New Testament Greek for Beginners (paperback) 1998 - 0899574971

  • Answer Book to Learn or Review New Testament Greek for Beginners Text -
Bell(paperback) 1985 - ISBN 0899575676

• Learn or Review New Testament Greek (Machen) – Bell (hardcover) 1998 -
ISBN 0899575668

Thank you so much for your help!
