Dear b-greek,

Please consider a question from a lurker.

Matthew 10:29b KAI EN EC AUTWN OU PESEITAI EPI THN GNH ANEU TOU PATROS
hUMWN

Most translations (eg. KJV) have "...without your Father."
A few (eg. NLT) have "...without your Father knowing it."
A few (eg. NIV) have "...apart from the will of your Father."

Isn't inserting the idea of the Father's "will" (NIV) theology rather
than translation or context?

I ask because maybe I am missing something in the Greek idiom that would
justify "will." I already understand that ANEU means something like
*without connection."

It seems to me that, lacking some quirk of idiom, the Greek word ANEU in
this context leaves open the possibility that persecution, even
martyrdom of Jesus' servants is *not* the Father's will. Even so,
Jesus' servants may be comforted by the presence of the Father as He is
also present when even a sparrow falls.

Thanks for your help!

Bryan
