I looked into this a couple years ago and found that Prentice Hall holds the
copyright to the both the first and second edition of Machen's text.
http://vig.prenhall.com/catalog/academic/product/0,1144,013184234X,00.html
They have exercised their right for that copyright. A number of publishers
selling the first edition had to stop. I asked both Wipf & Stock and
Trinity Foundation why they stopped selling the first edition and they both
said that text turned out not be in the public domain. That may also be the
reason why online versions are no longer available.
The story I heard was that Machen's brother had the copyright and then sold
it to Prentice Hall a number of decades ago.
I believe that the first edition will come into public domain in 2018. (95
years after publication). That is unless the US government changes the
copyright law again, which seems to happen each time Mickey Mouse is about
to enter the public domain.

Todd, Harold,
I'm a bit confused about what I knew or thought I knew about the status
of the copyright on Machen's grammar. It seems to me that after having
posted the information Harold quoted, I may have learned that I was
mistaken, and that someone still held a copyright on Machen's work after
all. I'm traveling at the moment and can't conveniently track the
information down. If someone else hasn't cleared up the matter before I
return home, I'll see if I can get the information then.
