Mitch:
See
Ex. 19:5 And now, if you will diligently obey me and
keep my covenant, then you will be my special
possession out of all the nations, for all the earth
is mine. 19:6 And you will be my kingdom of priests
and a holy nation.
The nation of Israel was God's "possession" as a holy
nation. Holy is not just what WE set apart, but what
GOD HIMSELF sets apart. In this USAGE, holy denotes
that which is owned/possessed by God.
Note that Peter uses this verse for Christians as
well.
As to your 'believers' or 'faithful ones' PISTOIS: one
must decide on grounds other than the word itself,
such as how is it used. If ambiguous, leave it that
way. Translate it "believers/faithful ones in Christ
Jesus..."
