Well, if I wanted my readers to consider the
contingent event from the perspective of it actually
taking place --- for the sake of argument--- then why
would an indicative seem odd? How the writer chooses
to PORTRAY the event may be significant. The first
class condition invites the reader to accept the
condition as true, yet it is still only a conditional.
I'm not answering the question as much as I'm asking
another one. I likewise don't find actually
events/activities being portrayed with the Subjunctive
mood unusual.
