Roger,
I just looked once again at I.H.Marshall (Luke NIGTC 1979,pp.
157-161) who has a reasonably lucid discussion of this issue.
LK3:23 KAI AUTOS HN IHSOUS ARCOMENOS hWSEI ETWN TRIAKONTA, WN hUIOS,
hWS ENOMIZETO, IWSHF TOU HLI ...
I think it is useful to maintain a clear distinction between
syntactical structure and semantic inference based on logic. The
statement "ENOMIZETO applies only to N hUIOS, hWS ... IWSHF, not the
whole genealogy" is a statement about syntactical structure.
However, if this is a genealogy of Joseph, then then ENOMIZETO might
have implications for the entire genealogy by logical inference. See
Marshall on this.
The reading that attempts to link IHSOUS directly to HLI, with the
comment about IWSHF as a parenthesis, sounds to me like exegesis
driven by a need to prove something. This is not an exegesis forum,
so I will briefly say that I read this as a genealogy of Joseph as
Jesus' legal parent which had ramifications for Second Temple Judaism
that are hard to appreciate for western post-moderns.

I don't teach greek. Perhaps one of the veteran greek professors here
can help you out with this. I vaguely perceived some confusion here,
but could not pin it down. My statement "TOU QEOU in v.38 applies to
ADAM" was intended to address what I understood as move to propagate
TOU QEOU backwards through the genealogy. I may have completely miss
read your intentions.
