PAULOS DOULOS QEOU APOSTOLOS DE IHSOU XRISTOU KATA PISTIN EKLEKTWN QEOU KAI EPIGNWSIN ALHQEIAS THS KAT' EUSEBEIAN
Welcome to the list. We try to include the transliteration of a passage with any question regarding it.
I am not familiar with Persbacher since I've always used BAGD, BDAG, L & N, LSJ, and Lust (for LXX), but it isn't substantially different from what you will find in BDAG (which I STRONGLY recommend that you get). I do think, however, that the servile nature is greatly overemphasized with regard to DOULOS. It almost seems that the lower one can make himself (in supposedly following Paul) the more elevated he feels he becomes. I like to remind people that the ministers of kings who held high positions in their government were also considered their servants. As such they spoke in the name of the ruler like the prophets of the OT with their "Thus says the LORD." They had power and authority. We are somewhat removed from an environment which is used to having slaves, yet even today the ministers or secretaries in the cabinet of the President of the United States can say as did Colin Powell, "I SERVE at the pleasure of the President." Yes, they are servants, but they are
not servile.

Subject: [B-Greek] The word DOULOS in Titus 1.1
Persbacher's lexicon gives the meaning of DOULOS as enslaved, enthralled, subservient. The KJV, NIV, Message use the word slave or servant. Is Paul making it known that he is Jesus' servant/slave only or is he adding to it something of what it's like to be with Jesus and may be expressing a feeling of being enthralled by him, something really exciting? First post from Matt a wannabegreeka.
