There are two numbering systems for Josephus -- Whiston and Loeb. What you have given is Whiston while Perseus uses Loeb. Those who do not have Josephus in Greek can find it at

For βουβῶνα (βουβών) [BOUBWNA (BOUBWN)] LSJ has
Arist.HA493b9: in pl., μέχρι βουβώνων Pherecr.23, cf. Luc.Tim.56.
2. in pl., glands, Hp.Epid.2.2.24.
3. swollen gland, Id.Aph.4.55, Arist.Pr.883b21, Men.Georg.51, J.Ap.2.2.
II. = Lat. bubo, owl, Id.AJ18.6.7, 19.8.2.

Liddell, H. G., Scott, R., Jones, H. S., & McKenzie, R. (1996). A Greek-English lexicon. "With a revised supplement, 1996." (Rev. and augm. throughout) (323). Oxford; New York: Clarendon Press; Oxford University Press.

Since Josephus clearly states

BOUBWNA DE hOI RWMAIOI TON ORNIN TOUTON KALOUSIN

It should therefore be entry II in LSJ which is to be understood.

Dear Colleagues,

In his Antiquitates judaicae 18.6.7 Flavius Josephus writes:
BOUBWNA DE hOI RWMAIOI TON ORNIN TOUTON KALOUSIN.

My major interest is on BOUBWNA: recently I found in an essay that BOUBWN
should have been integrated into Greek from Latin bubo. Another form
mentioned that should correspond with Latin bubo should be BUAS (but I do
not see any morphological link with this).

Questions:
(1) Does anybody know anything about such a link (is it plausible)?
(2) Does anybody know other instances in which BOUBWN (or BUAS) are used?

Thanks in advance for reflecting about this
semantic/etymological/morphological issue.

Best,

Thomas J. Kraus
