Perhaps = Heb. LiFNei in the sense, "in the eyes of" or "in the  
perspective of" ?

Or possibly we should understand MAQHTHS TOU IHSOU as a unit and KATA  
PROSWPON as a qualifier of MAQHTHS IHSOU; if that's the case it would  
be "not an overt disciple of Jesus." Somehow this second notion  
strikes me as more likely than the first.
