We are so addicted to translating PISTEUW as "believe" and associating that with an act or mental attitude of assenting to some proposition that we sometimes find it difficult to really get to the meaning of some expressions. There was another question recently involving the word PISTIS which was taken from Greek literature and indicated "loyalty" or "faithfulness." I think this is more nearly what is indicated by the word PISTEUW. In the case of PISTEUW EN TWi EUAGGELIWi I would consider this to intend "trust the gospel [and don't forget that EUAGGELION is 'good news']."

Subject: [B-Greek] Mk 1:15 believe 'with the good news'
Mk 1:15 METANOEITE KAI PISTEUETE EN TW EUAGGELIW
The verb associated with 'good news' is proclaim/preach (as
EVAGGELIZW). Here in Mk 1:15 it shows up along with PISTEUW + EN.
Now, as I understand the verb PISTEUW appears in the GNT in several ways:
+ dative, + EN, + EIS, + EPI
I am not sure whether 'believe the gospel' (or 'believe in the
gospel') is a common expression in church language (in contrast to
'hear' 'accept' the gospel). However, the text itself seems strange
and its meaning is not clear.
I wonder whether it makes more sense to take EN as instrumental (as
'with the good news'; e.g. BAPTIZW EN hUDATI Mt 3:11) to read the text
in this sense:
"Repent and believe upon receiving the good news."
Here the object of 'believe' is implicit - God, etc. That it is only
once shown in N.T. here does not help me much.
Thanks for your comments.
Oun Kwon.
