Luke 5:30 (Unicode)
30 καὶ ἐγόγγυζον οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς **αὐτῶν**
πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ
λέγοντες,
Διὰ τί μετὰ τῶν τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν
ἐσθίετε καὶ πίνετε;
Luke 5:30 (B-Greek transliteration)
30 KAI EGOGGUZON hOI FARISAIOI KAI hOI GRAMMATEIS **AUTWN**
PROS TOUS MAQHTAS AUTOU
LEGONTES,
DIA TI META TWN TELWNWN KAI hAMARTWLWN
ESQIETE KAI PINETE;
I'm not quite sure if I'm correctly understanding the function of AUTWN
in the first line of this passage. The verb EGOGGUZON has two objects:
EGOGGUZON
hOI FARISAIOI KAI hOI GRAMMATEIS (Subject)
AUTWN (Object A)
PROS TOUS MAQHTAS AUTOU (Object B)
BDAG mentions GOGGUZW PROS TINA, referring to Exodus 17:3, and says it
means to complain "against someone". My sense of that English phrase is
that to complain against someone means that person is the reason you are
complaining, but in Exodus 17:3, the people seem to be complaining *to*
Moses:
Exodus 17:3
(Unicode) ἐγόγγυζεν ἐκει̃ ὁ λαὸς πρὸς Μωυση̃ν
(B-Greek transliteration) EGOGGUZEN EKEI hO LAOS PROS MWUSHN
From the context, it looks to me as though Object A, AUTWN, is what the
Pharisees are complaining about - the disciples, and Object B is who
they are complaining to. True?
