I agree with you Eric, in as much as the compound words go. I come across,  
in my learning of NTG vocabulary that I guess many of these words correctly. 
I'm  learning from flashcards, and I'll pull out a new section to learn and 
every so  often, I see a compound word, I guess just by knowing each of the words 
within  the compound.
Honestly it's a joy when that happens for me.
