[B-Greek] A Question on 2nd year Grammars & what some call 3rd yr grammars

Don't forget the ladies as well -- Ann, Elizabeth, and others who contribute less frequently. While I am not a great fan of political correctness and would maintain that the generic use of "man" is still operative, it hardly seems that your use here falls into that category. You risk incurring the displeasure of my good friend Ann Nyland. While I appreciate reading her contributions, I would rather that she did not find it necessary to defend her gender.

As regards grammars, I'm not accustomed to think in terms of 1st yr, 2nd yr, and 3rd yr grammars. I tend to think that after the 1st yr what one uses is a "reference grammar", i.e. a grammar which doesn't seek to teach the elements of the language so much as to provide documentation of the usage -- in some cases somewhat obscure. After learning the elements of the language the emphasis should be upon READING texts written in Greek and finding a discussion of some not fully understood usages rather than continually attempting to garner more knowledge of the grammar apart from texts. If you have already learned the elements, the best advice I can give is read, Read, READ and clarify any points which seem unusual as you go along by using a GOOD lexicon (Which for NT Greek means BDAG or for Classical LSJ, for Patristic usage there is Lampe, and for the LXX there is Lust). Have a good reference grammar (or 2, 3, or 4). I can recommend A. T. Robertson,
Blass-Debrunner-Funk, Moulton-Howard-Turner for the NT. As has been mentioned numerous times on the list, Smyth is a must have although it is geared more for Classical Greek.

  Greeting all
I have Question on 2nd year Grammars & what some call 3rd yr.
Are some meant to be 3rd yr grammars? I was told, or heard that at Moulton's
4 vol set is a 3rd yr, or they used it for that purpose, and also Mounce's
Morphology of BG is being used as a 3rd yr grammar.
Is this correct as a normal way to learn?
I ask because it seems, besides Mounce's MBG that there is redundancy in
many areas, although I haven't used Moulton's, I have it and looked through it's
table of contents. If Moulton is a 3rd yr, Wallace who is 2nd yr seems to
say much of the same things, concerning nouns, verbs and so on.
And lastly, I'm using as I said before Wallace's and a few workbooks
(Mounce's graded reader and Baugh's 1 John graded reader, is it wise to do this, or
stick with one at a time? I do have time to do this, Thank God for that. For
those who don't know, I just finished Mounce's BBG and I'm starting 2nd yr, on
my own.
I'm grateful to be able to ask these questions from men who have done this
before I have, it's a joy to have this list as resource.
Thank you!
