While flash cards can be very helpful for initially learning a correct
gloss or two for the word (and especially, as you say "concrete" nouns, or
better, words with a specific referent and limited semantic range),
absolutely nothing beats reading/hearing lots of the language.  As Carl
pointed out, the exercise of looking up unfamiliar words, seeing the range
of meaning, and choosing the right meaning per context fixes it in the mind
like nothing else.  Even better is being able to intuit the meaning from
context alone, based on prior experience with the vocabulary.  Myself, I'm
a chicken -- even when I get it right, I will still tend to run to the
lexicon to make sure...  :)
