Dear everyone,
can you give your opinions on the etymology of the name Herod? I have
seen two options:
1) Thayer argues for the addition of a iota subscript to make it
equivalent to Hrwidhs "son of a hero".
2) The ISBE Bible dictionary simply says "heroic".
So, what does the -idhs ending mean here? Is the emphasis on a physical
descent of heroes, or a more associative focus on the heroic attribute
thus being possessed also by the bearer himself? Thanks for your opinions.
Erroso,
Tony
