Dear Hugh,
You have two prepositions following PROhORISAS...EIS hUIOQESIAN and EIS AUTON.
Thus, it follows, both modify PROhORISAS unless one postulates an understood
verb of EIMI, that being, EIVAI.
I am more inclined to take the former view and translate as follows:
"marking us out beforehand to adoption as sons (EIS hUIOQESIAN) through (by)
Jesus Christ TO HIMSELF (EIS AUTON) according to His willful/purposeful good
pleasure."
It is God who has marked use out toward sonship by means of or through Jesus
Christ as belonging to Him. It is one of ownership or belonging to or kinship.
En Xristwi,
Rev. Bryant J. Williams III
