[B-Greek] Colossians 1:5; EIS AUTON; Who got it right?

First of all, I think that the NIV did translate EIS AUTON. Without EIS
AUTON you would have "adopted as sons" and with it you have "adopted as his
sons."

I think EIS AUTON modifies hUIOQESIAN and identifies who the father is as a
result of the adoption.

While I think it understands the Greek the same way as in the NIV, I think
the New American Standard version is translation English. I don't think
English speakers say "adopted to himself." They say "adopted as his own."

Therefore my vote is for the NIV.

Subject: [B-Greek] Colossians 1:5; EIS AUTON; Who got it right?

First I will quote the verse:

PROORISAS hHMAS EIS hUIOQESIAN DIA IHSOU CRISTOU EIS
AUTON, KATA THN EUDOKIAN TOU QELHMATOS AUTOU

I found it very interesting how the major translations
treated EIS AUTON.

The New Jerusalem Bible treated it as though it
modified PROORISAS.

"marking us out FOR HIMSELF beforehand, to be adopted
sons, through Jesus Christ. Such was his purpose and
good pleasure"

The NIV and ESV leave it untranslated, here is the NIV

"he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through
Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and
will-

The New American Standard translated it like I
interpreted the phrase.

"He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus
Christ TO HIMSELF, according to the kind intention of
His will"

What say you forum? Which translation if any
interpreted EIS AUTON correctly?

ex animo
