As to why newer translators "call this 'cousin'", it's because that is the meaning of the term. I'm not sure which "older translators" you might reference since the AV and ASV render this as "sister's son" (i.e "cousin") and "cousin" respectively. You might refer to Tyndale or the Geneva Bible or some other older translation, but I rather doubt that. LSJ gives ἀδελφιδέος [ADELFIDEOS] or ἀδελφιδεύς [ADELFIDEUS] and ἑξάδελφος [ECADELFOS] for "nephew."

Subject: [B-Greek] cousin?
ANEYIOS - Col.3:10
Why did the older translators call this "nephew" and the newer
translators call this "cousin?"
Was some use of this word in another document clarify the meaning?
