Bert, I am new but wanted to give a reference to the Septuagint - these verses have this word in either verb or noun form. It adds to the connotation of the sadness on their faces ...

Ge 40:7 And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him in the ward of his lord's house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sadly to day?

Ps 35:14 I behaved myself as though he had been my friend or brother: I bowed down heavily, as one that mourneth for his mother.

Ps 38:6 I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.

Ps 42:9 I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

Ps 43:2 For thou art the God of my strength: why dost thou cast me off? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

Pr 15:13 ¶ A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

Jer 19:8 And I will make this city desolate, and an hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof.

Jer 50:13 Because of the wrath of the LORD it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues.

Da 1:10 And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.

I think that is exactly the point of the text here except that their
reason for appearing SKUQROPOI is not because they are aching or
because they are grieving because of a death in the family or
something, but because they want others to think they are
uncomfortable because of the sacrifices they are making in their
service to God. I don't think SKUQRWPOS refers to a specific "look of
fasting" but if those outwardly most pious people have the same gloomy
look about them at regular intervalls coinciding with the regular
fasts, others will be able to tell that such and so is fasting again.
