[B-Greek] hARPAX Mt 7:15

Tom,

Good question.

Just among adjectives that occur more than ten times,
Homer has three that end in a palatal: (MWNUX, KALLIQRIX,
and hELIX μωνυξ, καλλιθριξ, ἑλιξ)  I would think Greek has
many more, although they may be relatively rare simply because
nouns that end in a palatal are not all that common.  But I'm
curious.  If hARPAX were the only adjective that ended in a
palatal, what would your point be?  If one wanted to construe
hARPAGES as a noun in apposition to LUKOI, there is
no reason not to.

On a sort of related note.  Amplified refers to an interesting
echoe to Mt. 7:15 in LXX Ez. 22:27: hOI APCONTES AUTHS EN
MESWi AUTHS hWS LUKOI hARPAZONTES ARPAGMATA
TOU EKXEAI hAIMA οἱ αρχοντες αυτης εν μεσῳ αυτης ὡς λυκοι
ἁρπαζοντες αρπαγματα του εκχεαι αἱμα ("like wolves that
seize booty.")  This is pretty much what the Hebrew says too.
I've notice this many times myself, that in the
words of Jesus you are more likely to get a rough paraphrase
of the OT, rather than an exact quote.

Is ἅρπαξ -αγος (hARPAX -AGOS) a noun or an adjective? BDAG says
adjective. LSJ seems to indicate a noun. While there are lots of nouns with
stems in -K, -G, -C, none of which are neuter, this is the only adjective I can
find with a palatal stem.

If it is an adjective, what would be its neuter? If its a noun, how do we
understand Matthew 7:15, where it certainly seems adjectival?

Προσέχετε ἀπὸ τῶν ψευδοπροφητῶν,
οἵτινες ἔρχονται πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐν
ἐνδύμασιν προβάτων, ἔσωθεν δέ εἰσιν
λύκοι ἅρπαγες.
