I notice that Jewett quoted Anton Friedrichson's festschrift article
in the Walter Bauer volume as giving Suetonius, Galba 14.2 but that
should be corrected to Plutarch, Galba 14.2. That text has often been
used in spport of the "x and only x" translation in Rom. 1.17, but it
clearly cannot. An offlist friend has forwarded the address of 4
important articles on this topic that I now have in PDF form. Quarles,
NovTest 2003; Taylor, NTS 2004; two articles by Benware in The Bible
Translator and Notes on Translation. Both Quarles and Taylor show that
the "x and only x" translation is untenable linguistically, unless of
course Paul coined a unique idiom here that no one else used before or
since with the same meaning.
