On 12/30/2009 7:54 PM Chap8med at optonline.net scribbled the following:

> Merry Christmas, Charley!

And to you and your family!
> I understand the "tenting" among us of John 1:14, and have used that image in my own preaching. What I found more than a bit discomforting about this writer is that he moved so quickly from "tented" through "dwelt" to "tabernacled" to "templed," all the while claiming "tabernacle" for a better translation than the more obvious one and moving from more temporary dwellings--albeit signs of God's presence--to the fixed temple.

Yup..I've heard that as well. Those of us who actually read the Bible
are stunned and amazed at what folks can put together using logical
progression as an excuse. And then we wonder why churches are not as
full as hoped.
> I like your use of "preacherism" for the second quotation. I am still trying to wrap my mind around the rock-hard face looking at us with compassion.
Well, there's that. Over the past few years there's been this very
terrible song (among beaucoup terrible songs) that tells us that Jesus
wants to "wrap us in his arms." After gagging the first time I heard it
I've found there are folks who actually believe in "gentle Jesus, meek
and mild." I'm not sure where this touchy-feely stuff originates
(probably The Pit), but it is contrary to the latest description we have
of Him in the first part of Revelation. My suggestion is that the rock
hard face looking at us with compassion actually depicts the experiences
of life projecting a determination to overcome. Old people used to scare
us when we were little simply because that's what we saw: a rock hard
face. I understand that now that I am one of the "old people."
> Even more troubling is the appeal to what the Greek literally says, even though it doesn't.

Oh...{{{gasp!!!}}} Let's not get started on that one. heheheh...
> And a blessed New Year!
>
You, too!!

but I'd better stop here as I've discovered I've not uttered one Greek
word...hence off topic and liable to censure.

God bless
