We have finished the first four-week intensive SXOLH here in the
Judean hills. Classes were serene, fun, and engaging (according
to feedback. Some superlatives not listed here in interests
of modest decorum). STudents will probably remember that one
teacher could be counted on to want θυειν προβατον (του φαγειν!)
QYEIN PROBATON and another had a memorable way of asking
partipants ορχεισθαι ORXEISQAI!
Both teachers, Jordash Kiffiak and myself felt that a friendly,
light ambiance was maintained through most of the sessions
despite the short and rapid entrance into the language and despite
what those outside Israel might have imagined because of the news
on Gaza. Two teachers proved an essential policy not only in making
scenes and material more comprehensible, but provided needed
back up when I came down with a cold in week 3.

It was exciting for us to see that both the Hebrew and Greek were
'doable' in four-week modules and some participants mentioned that
the four-week option was a help for them to consider coming.
We only had two days of field trips in the course, so some students
who wanted to see more sites took proper advantage of weekends.
Of course, we were able to read several Greek inscriptions at
places like Caesaria, Kefarnaoum, and Tsipori, besides a few
related texts. That can be inspiring.
Participants left with some recordings and annotated texts to start reading
thru Johannine lit, James, and the Didache (maybe available on website
in a couple of months).

Of particular interest to those on this list, one participant kept a blog
record of his experiences, with some recordings and photos.
You can see these, in reverse order from day 20 to day 1, at

Anyway, teachers and some friends are excited enough with the
results to want to go off to the Galilee in two weeks for a 60-hour
Greek-only weekend. Sessions like these provide little incremental
upgrading for teachers. We would invite you all, but space will be
limited and the commute might be 'formidable'.
