In what sense do we understand a 'particle' as having a Subject? Since the Greek particle is not inflected, I had assumed it could not directly modify a Subject. Then again, I could see how the whole clause modifies substantives, so am I being too picky, or just revealing my ignorance of the English language?
BTW, I just read Grassmick's (??) diagram of Colossians chapters 1 and 2 and overwhelmingly the particles (hINA, hOTI) directly modified the finite verb, which of course did on occasion not have an expressed Subject but was simply embedded in the pronominal ending of the verb. So, again, in this sense I can see how it can be said to modify a Subject. One last observation on this: I read the last page of this diagram and saw in 4.16 hINA directly modifies POIHSATE but also feeds into the suject of the clause hUMEIS ANAGNWTE THN [EPISTOLHN] EK LAODIKEIOS. So here it IS directly attached to hUMEIS.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. (I think this is why my time in Greece was so hard for me. I just have no intuitive understanding of grammar and syntax.
