[B-Greek] Sigma substitution

I am working through Lucian, Peregrinus 11-13 and I have found that there is a regular substitution of ξ (Χ) for σ (S).  The examples are

ξυγγενομενος for συγγενομενος; ξυναγωγευς for συναγωγευς; and ξυνεγραφε for σ υνεγραφε.

I checked in BDF and Smyth but I cannot seem to find a reason for the substition.  Any ideas?  Where would I look to find the answer to the question?  I am assuming that the answer is somewhere in these grammars but I am looking in the wrong places.  I've checked the orthography section with no real help.

Thanks for any light,
