I just discovered a well written and well researched article by Andreas
Köstenberger. One of the best I have ever seen.

QUOTE:
In fact, he expresses approval of the man who is husband of a
single wife, whether elder, deacon, or layman, if he gives no ground for
criticism in his conduct of his marriage. He "will be preserved by the
generation of children." We note the following: (1) Clement links 1 Tim 2:15
with 1 Tim
5:14-15, alluding also to 1 Tim 3:2; (2) he applies the passage not
(merely) to women, but (also) to men
I need to be careful here, as I tried phrasing my last post as a question and
still blew it. Here goes.
Köstenberger translates Clement of Alexandria "He 'will be preserved'" but could
it not alternatively be translated "She will be preserved?"
In that case, Clement was not, in fact, applying the passage not merely to
women, but also to men--he was just further describing the leader's sole (not
single!) wife. And Köstenberger was being led astray by his own (culture's)
anthropocentric bias.
