Hello everyone.
A quick question about Jer 5:9 in the LXX (exactly the same phrase is found
in 5:29 and 9:8). What is the reason for the extra negative MH, given that
the following verb is negated by OUK anyway? In the Hebrew there is only one
negative, immediately preceding the verb. The phrase translated MH EPI
TOUTOIS is just "ha`al-'elleh", which has no negative and could be rendered
in Greek just by EPI TOUTOIS, couldn't it? So why the extra negation in the
LXX? The Greek text seems to translate into English literally as "Shall I
not punish them not for these things", or "Shall I not punish them except
for these things" (by analogy with Mt. 19:9 where MH EPI with the dative
also occurs), rather than just "Shall I not punish them for these things" as
the Hebrew obviously reads.
Does anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks for your help!
Sincerely,
Albert Haig.
