HTML I is the kind of class high school students always say they want. It's a creative, hands-on class involving technology, and there isn't even any homework to do. For some reason, though, students tend to fail the class in large numbers. For that reason, this page was developed to explain what it takes to do well in this class and what stands in the way of student success in HTML I.
How to Succeed:
- Be aware of the due dates for each project by going to the assignments page regularly.
- Read each class assignment carefully so you will know what is
expected for each assignment.
- Learn as you go. Do more than just get the project done;
consult the tutorials and learn all about the techniques used in
doing the project.
- Do the work well before deadline and get instructor feedback so
you will know how to make the project acceptable by the due
date.
- Do error checks in HTML-Kit to make sure your work is valid
HTML code. Do this before you get the instructor
to check your work.
Things to Avoid:
- Time wasters like online games, email, etc. This is a key piece
of advice. Most students who fail do so because of this kind of
off-task behavior. Losing your network account will affect not
just this class but many of the others classes here at
SRHS.
- Lateness. Students who start turning in work late almost never
catch up and sometimes fall so far behind that they cannot do all
the work and receive multiple zeroes.
- Doing bare-minimum jobs on the projects. This does not build
the foundation of knowledge you need for good performance on
tests, exams, etc.
- Taking advice from classmates instead of the assignments and
the tutorials. You'd be surprised how many students get
sidetracked by supposedly "knowledgable" classmates who don't
know nearly as much as they claim to.
