Classroom Policies: HTML I

Instructors generally do not look around for new rules to enforce. The policies below simply allow the class to run smoothly with a minimum of disruption. They also will help students focus on the class, maximizing their chances of success. Please follow the rules below at all times. Failure to do so will result in detentions, loss of network privileges or other penalties.

Classroom Rules and Policies

The Wake County Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) must be followed at all times. It's in your data notebook and it's online; learn it! Please realize that the school insists on a level of responsibility from our students. The loss of your network account resulting from various AUP violations will hurt your grade since work missed for this reason is not accepted. Thus, students should work on their class projects and limit other use of the machines to those rare occasions when other uses might be allowed.
NOTE: Students should be prepared to push back from their machines at any time during class. The teacher will inspect what you are doing and deal with problems as indicated. Failure to push back immediately will be taken as evidence of misbehavior.
NOTE: It is never acceptable under the AUP to email your files for this class to another student. This is a form of electronic cheating, no different from copying from another student's test paper, and as such it can result in severe consequences.
NOTE: It is never acceptable to use the computers to play music. Likewise, students should not have music as part of their projects for class.
This class is self-paced to a degree, but projects should be done in a timely fashion. Students are informed of project deadlines on the assignments page, and should work toward those deadlines.
See THIS PAGE for advice on how to succeed in this class.
One bright spot is that the class usually involves no homework, so it offers a break for students with a heavy class load.

Grading Policy: Student grades are derived from their work on the assigned projects and their grades on tests, usually two per semester. Tests and projects both count the same percentage. Acceptable projects, turned in by the due date, will receive a grade of A. Late work is accepted for one week after the due date, but with a maximum grade of 80. After that time, a grade of zero will be entered. Under special circumstances, however, such as extended illness, injury affecting the ability to type, or other compelling reasons, late work will be accepted for some form of credit at the discretion of the instructor.
IMPORTANT: Students must tell the instructor when they have finished a project so it can be checked off and credit can be given. Think of it this way: How does the instructor know the work has been completed by the deadline if students never demonstrate that fact?

No food or drink should be brought into the room at any time. This is standard for the whole school but this rule is especially important in computer classes. Detentions will result when food or drinks are found in the classroom.

Students should remain seated at their assigned seats unless given permission to move around the room for some good reason.

Students have almost no need to print anything; likewise, they should not have any CDs or floppies out or inserted into their machines. Permission may be given for these uses in exceptional circumstances.

Students should limit the number of applications they have open on their computers. Extra applications use up memory, slow down the machines, and sometimes cause them to crash.

Students should log off of the machines properly a few minutes before the end of class. Merely turning off the machines is hard on them and will not be allowed.
