| After my father died in 2004, I
discovered that the identify of at least one unit in which he served is
not included in his copy of his records. As I have researched my father's history I have become aware that other family history researchers struggle to fill in similiar gaps in their family member's records. The search can be difficult and discouraging. As my way of providing support and encouragement I am sharing sources I have used that may be useful to other family history researchers. |
| U.S.
Army
Enlistment Records in the U.S. National Archives and
Records Administration: A copy of the information from a searh for my father and links to the search site. This may be a good place to start. It can provide a researcher with basic information such as dates of service and service number which will easier make searching other sources. |
| Certification
of Military Service: A copy for my father reconstructed from alternate record sources after the 1973 National Personnel Records Center Fire, St. Louis, Missouri and links for requesting one. |
| County Clerk,
Recorder, or Registrar of Deeds: If you don't have a copy of the
veteran's discharge, check with the veteran's county clerk,
recorder, or registrar of deeds. A report on my search for what Cook County had regarding my father. Blank copies of the forms required for obtaining a copy of a veteran's discharge from the Cook County (Metropolitan Chicago), Illinois Recorder. |
