Gardone V.T. = Beretta plant in Val Trompia Gardone, Brescia, Italy, producing firearms since 1526.
1940-XVIII = Year of manufacture in regular and 18 Italian Fascist calendars.

Serial number (on other side of slide):  794052 = Manufactured between 1934 and 1942. (50073 - 999996).
Rear Frame (Receiver)  Marking:

RE = Regio Esercito

Translation: Royal Army. Italy remained nominally a monarchy while under fascist rule.
