Beauty
is a central element in the practice of Sufism and its
visual expression is given great importance. Every single
creative act on the Path of Sufism is directed toward
manifesting the unseen Beauty of the Divine. Every act
is a vehicle for appreciating the Unity of Humanity with
the Divine. As the Divine Calligrapher paints with the
pen of the human heart, the Sufi artist lets himself or
herself be painted. This spiritual aesthetic demands a
level of selflessnes and devotion in which nothing is
created for its own sake; in which everything points toward
our reunion with the Beloved. Both the viewer and the
artist must let go of all attachements, including attributing
one single spiritual meaning to the form. Enter the mystery,
ambiguity, playfulness, symbolism and metaphor of Sufi
imagery. |
