VABF provides producer and consumer education on ecological/sustainable agriculture; promotes the adoption of ecological/sustainable agricultural systems and practices; enlarges the understanding of ecological agriculture through research and study; and promotes the viability of rural communities through activities that encourage locally-based food systems, and their supporting structures.

Major activities include newsletter; meetings, workshops and conferences; the Ecological Production Pledge program; The Hometown Creamery Revival and BuyGreen Virginia.
