It actually seems like the sun never set, as my plane chased it around the globe and across the international date line. 14.5 hours of flying, a little waiting, and one train later, I'm in Tokyo!!
The trip was uneventful for the most part. I flew to Chicago, hung out in O'hare for about 20 minutes, found my gate (amazingly enough, it was the one with lots of Japanese people waiting), then flew to Tokyo. 12.5 hours in a plane is mindnumblingly boring. And the movies were horrible, between Zoolander, Hearts in Atlantis or some awful Courtney Cox "romantic comedy". I read a lot and watched a lot of the National Geographic channel, over and over. I didn't sleep on the plane.
When I got to Tokyo, I breezed through customs, changed some money (130 yen to the dollar) and met Janet. We trained to Tokyo from Narita airport (about an hour) then cabbed it to her apartment. I was blown away by the visual feast that is Tokyo! Everything glows and flashes--it's Time Square on steroids, all over. I met Filip (Janet's husband), who is exceedingly cool, and then we went out for some dinner--lots of sashimi, some cooked fish, too! Then, I crashed hard and now Janet and I are off to a traditional Japanese breakfast at Denny's!
The adventure has officially begun.
Seeing as how it's still Feb. 6th here, I'd say you've done a lot thus far. Tell us more about the Denny's....
