Your toilet says a lot about your country

I've never been one of those people that analyzes what certain things say about where you're from--I just try to take it all in stride. However, the Japanese toilet is cause for exception. It's the most amazing thing you've ever seen. First of all, it's operated by remote control. There's no handle, just an electronic keypad. The seats are heated. HEATED SEATS ON A TOILET! I don't even have heated seats in my car, but here my tush will be nice and toasty on the toilet.
In addition to the remote controlled flusher, every other aspect of the toilet is remote controlled, including lifting and putting down the seat and myriad other options I'm too afraid to try, because they're in Japanese. Is this a dream come true for American men or what? What man wouldn't put the seat down, if there's a remote control involved. The only problem: their wives having to wrestle the remote away just to flush.

Hi babe,
I can't believe I talked with you this am and you sounded just like you do in Durham. Technology is certainly a way too cool adventure itself, add to that the fact that you are literally half way around the world!! Amazing!!
So glad all is well and that you are soaking in all the sights, sounds, and raw fish....does it get any better!!!
Dad is going to Birmingham this weekend to see Uncle Jerry, to get a tooth fixed and to see if Jerry will let him go to the cabin. A fun filled weekend to be sure. Andrew and I are hanging out. I am going to email your site to him at school. He just wrote a paper on Hamlet. You would be proud. I'll ask him to send it to your email.
Jayme turned 21 yesterday. What a milestone. Unfortunately, it was a yucky day with snow, then rain, then more snow, more rain, more rain, more rain.
Time to finish the kitchen and plan for tomorrow!!! Have a great weekend and see about how to get me one of those toilets shipped home will ya. On second thought with heated seats that may incourage the males in this house to linger longer....no thanks!!! And making everyone feel guilty when they leave the seat up and I get hurt does have a certain power about it!!!
Much love,
Mom

between traditional japanese breakfasts at denny's and heated toilet seats, it sounds like you're getting spoiled, jimray. it's a good thing the japanese took up electronic development where the americans left off - otherwise, with apologies to bill bryson, we'd be carting around discmans the size of trinitrons and thinking the cassette tape is the best invention ever. do they still make trinitrons?
i bet sefton would kill for a remote control toilet, but i think i'd get the remote confused with the 17 others in our house. i'd want to change the channel, and instead i'd give someone in the bathroom a wicked surprise.

hope all's well.
