An impulse input function would mean that all of the nickel contaminant entered the stream all at once, which is clearly not the case here.

The contaminant starts entering the lake at a more or less steady rate when the plant starts operations, at a time we might call t 0. It stays at that steady rate for the forseable future. So the best choice for an input function would be the step input function as shown below:
