Since the input concentration does not seem to vary periodically with respect to time, the sinusoidal function would not be a very good choice to model this input.

The contaminant starts entering the lake at a more or less steady rate when the plant starts operations, at a time we might call t 0. It stays at that steady rate for the forseable future. So the best choice for an input function would be the step input function as shown below:
