Re: [nafex] Juneberries and CAR
I haven't (yet) found any natives on the farm here, but there are a couple
of A.laevis specimens on the grounds of the public library in town, that I
visit to pick - I don't think anyone other than myself and the birds have
a clue as to what they are or what they're missing. No rust on them, but a
much smaller crop this year than last.
I've got a dozen or so young A.alnifolias in the orchard at home, no
noticeable rust problems. Timm&Success seedlings had a good crop of
berries(their second year bearing), and I managed to make it to the house
with maybe a pint of berries, but then the mockingbirds found 'em and
cleaned 'em out. Jennybelle set a few berries this time; Northline,
Pembina, Theissen, and Honeywood look OK - no rust, but no berries, either.
A number of scraggly redcedars(chewed & rubbed almost to death by calves &
horse) are growing in the neighbor's fencerow a hundred yards away -
haven't noticed any CAR galls on them, and I'll probably take them out
sometime this summer - he won't mind.
