Marina Small Business Incubator AG Tech Start-Up Is First in California To Have Its Compost Tea USDA Certified Organic

MARINA, Calif., May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- At the Marina Small Business Incubator (www.msbi.org), Highlands Soils & Water (www.healthysoil.com), a subsidiary of Western Applied Technologies, is the first to offer California's agricultural and horticultural industries, on a commercial scale, USDA-certified compost tea -- diverse populations of micro-organisms that restore life to languishing soils and reduce water, power and chemical consumption.

"What this means is that organic growers can now use compost tea without risk to their organic certification," said Highlands President & CEO Tom Piatkowski. "And conventional growers can more easily move toward organic processes. Our products, with their high levels of active bacterial, fungal and protozoal biomass, will save farmers money on pesticides, fertilizers, water and energy to contain and lower production costs."

Compost Tea is the product that promises to restore life to California's farms and soccer fields, increasing the soil's ability to hold water and fight off opportunistic diseases that have come to the fore with the ever-increasing use of broad-spectrum pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Though compost tea is not a new term in agriculture, Highlands has perfected the brewing of a clean and robust tea in quantities great enough to apply to the largest agricultural enterprises. In laboratory testing, Highlands' Compost Tea provided 40 times the industry's desired average of total biomass (bacteria and fungi). And Highlands' compost tea costs half as much as applying compost the traditional method.

Municipalities and school districts are another target for Highlands' vegetation management services. Their strategy is to reduce the use of fertilizers and pesticides on public recreational grounds and schools. At the same time, they improve and maintain playability at affordable costs.

Piatkowski has spent the last 14 years providing solutions to California agricultural customers as a representative of Goemar Laboratories, Cytozyme Laboratories and, most recently, as the National Bioscience Products Manager for Helena Chemical company, one of the nation's largest distributors of chemicals and technology for agricultural use.

The City of Marina's Incubator is co-located with the University of California's MBEST Center on the Monterey Bay Coast of California. The Incubator is a not-for-profit business accelerator in close proximity to the more than 30 technology, science, research and education institutions in the heart of the region's unparalleled, year-round agricultural markets.
