I think that a little clarification is in order. First of all, Chlorimines=
are name for a family of chemicals. While it is true that the simplest for=
of chlorimine is are difficult to remove from water (monchlorimine NH2Cl),=
others will off-gas extremely quick (dichlorimine and trichlorimine). In =
fact, if these did not off-gas quickly, the use of chlorimines to treat wat=
er would be useless since these tend to be carcinogenic). There are two ea=
sy ways to remove all of the monochloromine fairly inexpensively and relati=
vely quickly. The first is to add about 1.25 grams of ascorbic acid (Vitam=
in C..can be found in the canning section of the grocery store or you can s=
ubstitute lemon juice. The quantity depends upon the concentration) for eve=
ry 50 gallons of water. The second way is to superchlorinate the water usin=
g sodium hypochlorite bleach or pool sanitizer to a concentration of 10 ppm=
and a pH of 7. what 24 hours and then expose to about 4 hours of sunlight =
to remove the residual chlorine. The ascorbic acid will neutralize the mono=
chlorimine but be careful to not overdose it too much or the pH will change=
. Both methods are relatively inexpensive.
The idea of neutralizing the chlorimines utilizing biomass will also work b=
ut realize that you will need to add the biomass in addition to the amount =
of compost (compost is added a day or so after the biomass) The monochlorim=
ine will affect the organisms in the biomass so it is good to start with fr=
esh compost once the chlorimines have been oxidized.
