Since time began soil micro-organisms have adapted to wet and dry cycles -
just as natural pasture has adapted to fire events. Fire can benefit
pastures in numerous ways, for example by making nutrient elements more
available, by removing large woody plants and allowing the succession of
smaller plants. This is not to say that intervention is not advantageous,
land that has been burnt is prone to wind and water erosion.

It is more probable (in my view) that the soil will benefit more from the
organic matter provided than from anything else. Generally though, land
recovers quickly on its own if allowed to.

To benefit some of the land area in Texas affected by the recent fires many
people are planning to put together native grass and wild flowers seed balls
mixed with compost to distribute in affected areas. To prevent seeds from
germinating the compost must be dry. My question is when compost dries out
which it has from sources in Texas, does it totally disrupt the
microorganisms in the compost or do they go dormant, go to spores, etc. and
then again become active when moisture returns? Or do you end up with
organic matter with little microorganism representation?
