Yes this design does work just fine. That is one reason I posted the link o=
n my page (where you say you found it)
My point is that one can acheive the same results with a single airlift. Us=
ing the single airlift design one can use a smaller and cheaper pump, there=
is the same vortex produced visually, the dissolved O2 is equal to slightl=
y increased, the microbial results are the same, there is much less cleanin=
g to do in between brews. The cost of the pipe, fittings, etc. is much redu=
ced. We have found that Schedule 40 pipe is unnecessary and it reduces flow=
slightly. We have successfully used ASTM 160 & 200 PVC which is a lot less=
expensive.
The one advantage with the 4 airlift design is that it can stand up. Using =
the single airlift, a stand must be fashioned. One easy fix for a small siz=
ed brewer is to just set the cone bottom tank into a pail with the sides cu=
t out for the (return/riser, etc) pipe to pass through.
Have you seen the photo in the photo section, of the brewer using the same =
tank (water bottle)? The guy who built that uses an Eco commercial 1 air pu=
mp. This is the same pump we used to drive the 10 gallon brewer depicted in=
the video I posted.
I encourage people to build brewers as inexpensively as possible, using mat=
erials they have on hand (if they so desire), even a bucket and a stick.
I have no knowledge whether a vortex changes water structure positively or =
negatively. I am trying to remain open minded about that. I, myself have ob=
served no effects other than what I've stated concerning very thorough mixi=
ng and some increased surface area. I do think if one returns the water to =
the surface too smoothly, that the advantage gained could be lost, as the s=
lap into the water breaks the surface tension allowing a greater gas exchan=
ge and higher dissolved oxygen (IMO).
