My take on brix numbers is simple. If we first accept the
idea that higher brix is good with the proviso that, it needs to be
functioning, cycling if you like, and not caused by things like moisture
stress.
What I am looking for is relationships
brix of treated vs brix of untreated - is there an increase,decrease or the
same? thats why you must do the tests at the same time of day same weather
conditions, the base number is not the issue, its of no importance TO THAT
PARTICULAR BRIX TEST .
Arden Andersen says that 12 brix at the weakest part of the
plant at the lowest point of the day will bring immunity from insect attack,
I think that would mean brix around 20 or higher in the midday sun.
My experience with grain crops has been that a fruiting
oriented foliar combination will give a good brix increase in the
appropriate timing window (38 - 42 days) but the same mix a week later or
earlier will cause a decrease. (when the plant is in growth mode) I figure
thats a major implication for fruit and vegie crops, some of which are
notorious for dropping blossoms or newly set fruit, maybe I'm wrong thats
not my line of business.
We also use this when putting a foliar together where there
are weeds - look for a combination that increases the brix of crop and
reduces brix of the weeds - again base number is unimportant to the test -
we look to increrase one and decrease the other - not always easy to do but
a simple concept and dead easy to measure.

No can do - forget the baseline - look at the relationship - treated vs
untreated - increase? decrease? no change? keep it simple
You have to have that baseline in
> order to say the treated plants are better or worse.
