Hoover/Boulder Dam had to be engineered with no 90 degree angles in their
spillway system. The properties of water moving around that corner create a
lower pressure area on the downward edge of the corner (around the bend).
With liquid under pressure the water actually boils becuase of the lower
pressure (same thing at higher altutudes). As the gas and liquid travel
down the pipe this Burnolli effect is reversed with great disaster to the
dam's pipes. The air is now compressed again and explodes pitting the pipe,
eventually breaking the pipe and carving out the mountain in that area.
I don't think this happended here, but what engineers learned on another dam
had to be applied in Black Canyon below what is now Lake Mead.
Of course those pressures, velocities, etc are not achieved in circlulating
brewers but I can see how that low pressure area is a prime site for
bio-film!
