RES: RES: [compost_tea] Pre activating Compost

Hi Ross,

Chitin or its derivative Chitosan doesn´t kill RKN or any other
nematodes by themselves. Both Chitin and Chitosan will increase
the flora ( bacteria, fungi and actinomyces) that will degrade
those molecules by producing chitinase , an enzyme that has the
ability to destroy ( digest ) chitin and chitosan.
You can find both compounds in the nematode eggshell .
Therefore by increasing the chitinase producing flora you will
be making a very inhospitable place for nematodes to live.
It happens that I have a lot of problems of Root Knot Nematodes.
In those particular worm beds I am not really concerned about
beneficial nemas. I just want to produce chitinase producing
organisms to be used for both RKN and insect control.
Maybe Dr Elaine could explain how to destroy RNM without destroying
beneficial nematodes. I really don´t know what is going to happen to
the poor beneficials in those worm beds.

Jose

Hi Jose,
A question on producing chitinase organisms in the worm beds-wasn't
chitian
used to kill root feeding nematodes and if so would they hurt the
nematode
populations in the worm beds? If they don't hurt the beneficial
nematodes
and can produce some insect resistance in the vermicompost I think it
will
be great. Please let us know how this goes.
Thank you,
Ross Orner

Upon adding just a small amount of that mix to
either Compost or Vermicompost I got an increase in
temperature in a matter of 24 hours.
After say 4 to 5 days the temperature goes down and
everything becomes like a solid block and with a gray looking
colour. Upon breaking those blocks apart you can see lots
of fungi spores.
I have to wear a mask to avoid breathing the gray spores.
It really works.
Right now I am experimenting with Shrimp Shells ( chitin)
because I want to grow some chitinase producing organisms
to enhance insect control..

Jose

Jose, I just saw your powder mix for what has been offically dubbed
"pre-brew compost innoculation". Simple is always the answer. Almost
any one of them will grow fungus. I think your system is overkill.
But if it works, who cares? Well, most folks like simple and CHEAP.

Cheers,

Jeff L
