I usually spray roses twice with lime sulphur during the winter...not mixed
with compost tea, though...It would be a completely different application,
the old theory being that spraying with lime sulfur killed diseases. Maybe
the CT is sufficient for this without using any lime sulphur, so perhaps I
am clinging to a useless old habit, eh? Should I just give up the lime
sulphur habit?

As for the soil soup machine...in the mists of ancient memory, I seem to
recall that I first heard of CT brewers in articles by Ann Lovejoy, and I
think the soil soup machine was mentioned by her...I believe that that is
the brand used by the nursery on Bainbridge Island with which she is
associated and that they are happy with the results. I pestered my local
nursery owner into getting a Soil Soup machine and that is what we have been
using. (Our own gardening business is so overwhelmingly busy...and we have
so many clients...that we are literally too tired to add the making of CT to
our tasks...it is so much easier to just get if from our local nursery! My
partner has a couple of medical conditions that conk him out into a sound
sleep by 7 or 8 every evening!). We are applying it to smallish
areas...garden beds, small park planting areas, and so on...not to any large
acreage at one time. So...I fear we are pretty locked into Soil Soup at the
moment although if we ever find the energy to get our own brewer going, we
will take your advice.

I have noticed some excellent, although not scientifically tested, apparent
results, as have other nursery shoppers who have purchased and used the Soil
Soup...Apparent (anecdotal) reduction in black spot, powdery mildew, an
apple tree with much healthier looking foliage than ever before, roses that
were decimated by black spot leafing out with lovely new foliage that stays
clean...

Oh, the nursery owner in question is a retired science teacher so he is
fascinated with the process of making the tea. Unfortunately, he is not
online so I share with him what I glean from online sources.
