Re:[compost_tea] Questions about Lactobacillus acidophilus

Hi Dr Elaine,
I'm passing this on any comments ?
(I was reading your chapter on Growing Grapes Organically (Ch. 4) that
talks about methods to assist the soil structure using natural nutrients
and fungi, etc., and it reminded me of a summer job I had when I was a
teen (25 years ago). I was hired by a start-up biotech company (Culbac
Canada Ltd.) that was testing the effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus
(the beneficial yogurt bacteria) on both farm crops as a soil additive,
and on livestock as a food additive. I think we also tested it on silage
fermenting as well.

I was just the gopher charged with making the control measurements (and
electrocuting myself with the metal spray wand while ducking under the
electric fences) on the test-plot farms.

At home, I remember sprinkling this stuff (liquid) on the dirt under an
old, neglected, stunted, sickly, runt of an apple tree in our backyard.
This tree never bore more than a couple misshapen apples each year. But
the following year... Holy Macintosh Batman! That old tree sprang to
life, bushed out nicely, and produced a very healthy crop. And I do
remember the farm test-plots showing some pretty amazing crop results.

So, I was wondering if anyone has ever done any further research with
this bacteria. I have never heard what ever became of the product or the
company. As I was reading your book, it struck me that, L. acidophilus
might be another organic method that may prove beneficial to grape
growers. Have you ever heard of this?
