Cool! I look forward to seeing the pictures! Rhizobium does infect root hairs, and the bacteria travel in an infection thread through the root hair, to the place the root hair connects to the main root, and that is where the bacteria make the plant form the nodule.

Burkholderia is a new genus of bacteria, some of which are what I knew as Rhizobium when I was in grad school. So, quite likely what we used to call the non-effective Rhizobium. I guess it doesn't surprise me that these bacteria would be able to colonize inside plant tissues. They have a special mechanism - lecithin receptor molecules - that allow them to get into certain kinds of cells.

But if you ate a zillion of these bacteria, they wouldn't be anything except extra protein.

Now, the Bacillus and Pseudomonads being inside the stem.... hum, not quite sure what he meant by that. In the outer layers of stem cells? Not systemic, apparently.
