Re: [compost_tea] Re: fungal tea, vineyards and mildew
In the data reported on the WSARE website from the SFI trails on mildew and
grey mold in vinyards, it was important to start getting coverage BEFORE the
mildew germinated and started to grow.
In the years we ran the study, mildew outbreak alerts were issued from Oregon
State University early in hte growing season.
When the tea was great, we only had to spray twice a month, and we got
prevention of the disease. when the tea wasn't so good, or not enough was applied,
then weekly sprays were required.
I think Ted mis-heard what we said at SFI - we would NOT say daily or every
other day sprays. I want to know the person's name if they actually said that,
becuase I need to go correct my employee if they said daily or every other
day.
The proper answer, based on data, is every WEEK, or every other week.
The control, without any protection, succumbed to mildew within two days of
the mildew alert going out from the University. Those areas went into compost
tea applicaitons, and the compost tea solved the problem, got rid of the
mildew.
The conventional chemical controls were effective too, but they had to spray
one thing for mildew and another for grey mold, while we only did the tea for
both.
In the study, we reduced chemical applications by 85 to 100%, depending on
the quality of the tea, the vineyard we were working with, and the frequncy of
tea application.
The data are on the WSARE website, but don't ask me how to find it. I know
its there, people have found the right place to read the results, but I haven't
found it when I've gone looking.
We will publish the results, when I get time to do so. That means, cash flow
at SFI has to be good, so I can take time off to do the work.
Remember, I don't get paid, the way academics do, to publish things.
