REply t>to Mclean: We put asphalt bases on twin bunker silos used for hay
crop silage a couple of years ago after finding two silos that were still
in good shape after 20-30 years. We had just spent $5000 in resurfacing
our concrete bunker for corn silage, worn right down to the rebar. So in
20 years or so we'll have a fairly decent comparison. Don't know anything
about toxicity, but the farmers with old asphalt bunkers didn't report any
problems. Penn State ag engineers also had good vibes about asphalt, with
some experience. It cost us 2/3 as much for asphalt as poured concrete. We
did pour a pad at the entrance since asphalt will break off badly on esposed

edges.
